Regiment History: Chickamagua after battle report: Report of Col. James F. Pressley, Nineteenth South CarolinaInfantry, commanding Tenth and Nineteenth South CarolinaInfantry.HDQRS. TENTH AND NINETEENTH S. C. VOLS.,Missionary Ridge, Tenn., October 5, 1863.CAPT.:I have the honor to report the part taken by thiscommand in the late battle of Chickamauga. On September 18, we were first formed in line of battle onthe right bank of Chickamauga Creek, a little above Lee andGordon's Mills, and having three companies in front asskirmishers our line did not become engaged, but was at timessubmitted to severe shelling from the enemy's batteries on theopposite side of the creek, from which we lost 2 men killed and5 wounded. We held our position till the afternoon of the 19th, when, together with the remainder of our division, we were moved tothe right some 2 miles crossing Chickamauga Creek at Hunt'sFord, moving forward and taking position in the front line of thearmy for the night. On the morning of the 20th, our division was transferred to thecommand of Lieut.-Gen. Longstreet, and we were placed in theLeft Wing of the army. At 11 o'clock we were ordered placed inagainst the enemy. Moving forward some three-quarters of amile, we encountered his line strongly posted, partly behindbreastworks of logs and dirt and partly behind the crest of a hill.We advanced up to within about 60 or 70 yards, when theengagement between us became general and exceedingly hotlycontested. Out brigade being, unfortunately, not supported on theleft, and the enemy's line overlapping us, the three left regimentswere necessarily either forced to retire or move by the right flankfor protection under some woods on their right. This entirelyexposed my left, the enemy at the same time opening from thatdirection a most terrific enfilade fire upon us with both musketryand artillery, from the effects of which my command wassuffering intensely. Notwithstanding this, the men fought withgreat desperation, and the left of my command, principally theNineteenth Regt., succeeded in pushing forward, driving theenemy from three pieces of his artillery and passing somedistance beyond the captured guns. My position at this timebecame a critical one, being comparatively isolated, and, afterhaving had some of my best officers disabled and many a noblesoldier killed or wounded, we were forced to retire. Just at thisjuncture Brig.-Gen. Anderson's brigade came to our relief, a partof one of his regiments passing through my ranks as we werefalling back, which, together with the terrible fire to which wewere exposed, divided my command. In a very few minutes Isucceeded in rallying a portion of my regiments, amounting to afair representation from each company, and immediately followedafter the gallant Mississippians who were driving the alreadyseverely punished Abolitionists before them.Owing to the forced retirement of the left of our brigade, I wasat this time alone, but finding Maj.-Gen. Hindman, he orderedme to report temporarily to Brig.-Gen. Deas, who was thenreforming his brigade. I moved on his left for some two hours, till I again met my own brigade. We were then moved forwardto attempt to dislodge the enemy from a strong position occupiedby his center on very high hills near the Rossville road. Hisposition here was well chosen, and his troops encouraged byhaving repelled one attack of our troops against him. We movedupon this position about 3. 30 o'clock, and were several timesrepulsed, but not discouraged; we would as often advance uponthe enemy's stronghold. Here the last struggle was made by ouradversaries, and they brought up line after line of their reservetroops and threw them against us. But by the determination ofour brave soldiers and the firm resolve which seemed to pervadealmost every breast that we would conqueror die, we succeeded about sunset in completely routingthem and assisted in gaining for our army a signal victory. Thisended the fighting in the battle of Chickamauga. The two regiments which I have the honor to command did theirduty nobly, and where so many did their whole duty it would beinvidious in me to make distinctions. Of course, as is probablythe case in all bodies of men, there were individuals who failedto act their part in the great struggle, but of those it would be outof place to particularize in this report.I am particularly indebted to and most cheerfully award the meedof praise to Lieut. Col. Julius T. Porcher, Maj. J. L. White, andAdjt. J. O. Ferrell for valuable and efficient service renderedthroughout the entire battle. Our losses were heavy. We buried upon the battle-field 1commissioned officer and 25 enlisted men. Our wounded are 5commissioned officers and 205 enlisted men. Total loss, 236. Anumber of our wounds were mortal and the list of dead that wehave already heard of reaches over 40.I am, captain, most respectfully, your obedient servant,J. F. PRESSLEY,Col., Comdg.Capt. C. I. WALKER,Asst. Adjt. Gen., Manigault's Brigade.Source: Official RecordsCHAP. XLII.] THE CHICKAMAUGA CAMPAIGN. PAGE 354-51[Series I. Vol. 30. Part II, Reports. Serial No. 51.]
