The 10th SC Infantry Regiment was reportedly organized during 1861 in Georgetown County, SC from volunteers in the general area and surrounding counties.  Company B of this regiment, which was called the Brooks Guards, was formed by volunteers from Horry County.

The regiment fought in several major Civil War actions that included the Battle of Atlanta; Siege of Charleston; Siege of Chattanooga; Battle of Chickamauga; and Siege of Corinth.  Accounts indicate that no officers and only 55 soldiers of the original 1,200 members of the regiment survived at war’s end.
